SHHHH : The Norwich Guide that You’ll Definitely Want to Hear About

The Best Bites, Sights and Nights in the SHHHH Guide to Norwich

Norwich has always been home to a bustling community of artists, musicians and independent traders. It has a history of publishing, printing and bookselling in addition to beautiful architecture. Norwich Cathedral being the most obvious example. Now, the Norwich scene is flourishing with new establishments. As they pop up around the winding Lanes and market; the city has become a magnet for students and young creatives.

The SHHHH Guide to Norwich – an annual publication and collective founded 5 years ago – shines a light on these hidden gems of the city while creating an artistic community for the talented locals. Here are the best bites, sights and nights the guide has to offer:

Brick

Made in a brick oven with authentic Italian ingredients, Brick pizzas are certainly something you’ll want a slice of. Rather than overlooking the Trevi Fountain, the edge of Norwich market is this pizza haven’s home. The location fits the laidback, bring your own drink (with small corkage fee) vibe perfectly. Ever since opening its doors in 2015, Brick has given-back to the Norwich community with its ‘Buy a Brick’ scheme. With this, customers write their name on a brick and donate £4 to give a pizza to someone in need.

East Gallery

Also in the SHHHH Guide to Norwich, East Gallery regularly shows work from the Norwich University of the Arts students in addition to visiting artists and collaborators. Situated near the river in the Norwich Lanes, the gallery’s large windows make it an excellent place show art; particularly sculpture. An upcoming exhibition, ‘In Quotes: Collage and Assemblage in Contemporary Art’ will take advantage of the bright, open space with works from installation artist, Cornelia Parker and sculptor, Rowena Hughes.

Birdcage

In the heart of the Norwich Lanes, The Birdcage has long been a favoured creative venue and watering hole for artists and muscians. It has hosted the likes of Primal Scream, Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard. With an Art Deco exterior and quirky bar, it serves as an intimate setting for DJ sets, comedy nights, quizzes and poetry performances. The diverse cocktail menu serves local twists on classic cocktails- the ‘Pottergate Mule’ being a popular option. Community integration has always been the spirit of the Lanes and visitors are encouraged to bring in their fish & chips from the famous Grosvenor’s Fish Bar located opposite.

Catfish / Dogfish

Long-term favourites of the SHHHH Guide to Norwich, these clothing shops stock some of the hottest streetwear and contemporary brands. Catfish – the women’s part of the franchise – is in the basement of Seven Wolves on Exchange Street. Wander down the stairs and into the little slice of womenswear heaven. Check out brands such as the beautifully minimalist Norse Projects to Brit heritage brand Fred Perry.  The Aladdin’s cave of limited editions and collabs also stocks Vivienne Westwood, Stussy and Carharrt – shared brands of its brother franchise, Dogfish (just a stone’s throw away on Bedford Street).

The city has plenty to offer, and the SHHHH guide highlights all of our favourites and more. Stay tuned this summer for the 2017 SHHHH Beginners Guide to Norwich. This one will be even bigger and better than before. After a years hiatus, it’s back and we can’t wait. Read more about one Norwich business that is creating waves here.
